Librarians are hiding something
...just one of Stephen Colbert's many trademarks...and for good reason. I had a total stereotype shattering and paradigm shift about librarians, thanks to a new friend I met at Coffee with Crayon. Librarians are not tied to physical libraries or even books anymore, but instead are quite the innovators.
LibraryTechtonics is an awesome read, and Andrea is living proof that anyone can be forward-thinking, regardless of what stereotypes surround your occupation. She also writes for the Public Library Association Blog and leads her industry in pushing the conversational envelope.
It is my personal belief that we are always surrounded by opportunity. Even when it comes to standard fare like a job title, we can choose to innovate and create something special. Andrea is likely the ONLY person in the world to hold the title "Reference and Techie Librarian" - which is probably more than you can say for all the C-level executives out there. Something tells me that the title didn't exist before her, either. As there is now more clutter, more change, and more conversation in our worlds than ever, an open mind is surely one of the most powerful assets you can have.
The next time you perform even the most routine of tasks, see if you can switch off the auto-pilot and find that room for innovation.

In response to Colbert's "trademarked" phrase "Librarians are hiding something," please see our Apologia addressing both this and the word ~truthiness~:
